What happened with Demonoid and Deimos?
« on: April 16, 2019, 09:26:10 AM »

From where to start..what to write? The more I think, the more it hurts, and the harder it gets to accept it even though months passed, it's still a fresh scar.

Before I start, I hope that there is a 1% chance that this is incorrect and not true, as the local news in the report wrote one detail incorrectly.

With great sadness, I want to announce that Deimos, the founder of Demonoid known as someone who was one of the earliest and influential people on the torrent scene since it's beginning has died in an accident back on August, 2018. Everything happened so fast and so unexpected, one moment I was speaking with him, next moment I found out that he died after I went to sleep and told him good night. For days I blamed myself and thought what would happen if I didn't go to sleep that day and continue speaking with him before he went out and the accident happened.

The hardest thing is that this falls on me to tell and knowing how big fan base there is for Demonoid, it is really, really messed up to tell people something like this.

The family members rejected any form of contact and I respect it as they had a traumatic experience and lost the person they care about.

There is a commemoration page which was made months ago, but I never got enough strength to release it and I'm not good with words, so you can read there a farewell message.

https://www.demonoid.info/commemoration/index.html

After Deimos death, someone was using his cheapo laptop to visit Demonoid as I was seeing activity over his Demonoid profile several times until servers were wiped out to default apache page (That laptop is the only thing which can access Demonoid backend and his Demonoid profile along with cloud backup servers).  It was someone with enough tech skills such as friends or Umlauf himself, so currently there is at least one person who holds the database of Demonoid and if it ever comes back that person will not be Deimos.

Edit: As some people messaged me worrying about their privacy, the login happened around four days after accident happened, and there is no way that someone could break custom made cryptography and get on the server that fast, let alone get the laptop and do stuff. That was someone who already had access. My guess would be Umlauf, someone from close family, or a friend who was lending several servers for Demonoid.

What now?Staff will try to rebuild Demonoid to what it once was, there is no promise of success but it will be an upcoming task. [/b]

Deimos had big expectations for Demonoid before he died, he spent over 8 hours a day coding and improving Demonoid for months and wanted to deliver what he promised to the community. Many things were happening behind the scene, he cared so much about users privacy and replied almost to everyone who private message him and asked how he was and stuff. He was really a friendly person. I'm glad that I had a chance to know him and I will miss him dearly, not because of Demonoid only, but because of the person, he was.

Edit: As for the end, here's the highest traffic peak of Demonoid with multiple millions of visitors per day, where it was in pair with mininova, piratebay and torrentz at the time

So many comments and so many questions..thanks to everyone who were part of this tracker and journey through the years. I will answer some questions and get some insight as fans deserve to know a bit more.

For starter , I cannot disclose the information about the death and Deimos' real name as we should all value people's privacy and we shouldn't put the people who suffered a loss in info hunt.

Demonoid original name came up as a demo site for music tracks which was the original purpose at start. So it reads DEMOnoid.

Deimos nickname comes from the Greek deity and Deimos had a strong passion for mythologies, beliefs in gods, ancient stuff, bible and would speak for hours about it when asked.

Deimos had a very big passion for hard metal music and used to ask people to link him their country metal as it was never ever enough for him. He had a collection of some rarest flacs, unrelease to public songs and much more stuff, he was really into it.

As a teenager he used to play acoustic guitar at local bars and was very good at it.

His favorite youtube channel was 'Life of Boris' and wanted to travel to European countries just to see the culture.

He never had a chance to know that his favorite magician which he showed me Shin Lim won the America's got talent.

Deimos used to get irritated by me on regular basis as I used to spam him with Despacito and Justin Biebers song with clickbait texts like 'mate have you seen today news?! And link to youtube song' to the point where he embed into my demonoid account song from justin bieber which plays whenever I visit Demonoid. I would insert here laughing smiles..but it doesn't feel right anymore.

There were so many stuff happening behind the scene which were both fun, sometimes sad, and also interesting and I will miss all of that. And lastly not to forget he also liked animes and comics.

Hopefully with this, fans can learn a bit more of the person we lost.

Sad news, a piece of me has gone with it.  I have been a huge fan of Demios and Demonoid since I first joined.  The fact Demios actually had values for the site and encouraged families to use the service was something that set it apart from the others and said a lot for what the man who started it all was like outside of it.  Often I would find people's personal lives shared on Demonoid in the way of holiday photos and family gathering videos, with the torrent descriptions detailing the date of the events archived and how to use torrents so that the intended recipients could access those memories.  It was no surprise to discover that Demios was a man of note away from his online avatar.
I've always been a very vocal supporter of Demonoid and as such was a proxy news service to many regarding the status when downtime occurred, with members approaching me privately for their updates. Last night I had the sad task of delivering the final update to a good number of people and it was with a heavy heart that I did such.
Thank you Phase1G for being here for us zealots over the last few months and keeping us in the loop.  I know it must have been hard for you to keep your chin up and you have managed to be a rock for all members longing for the return.  Thank you to Dotsrus, Dvsdmn and all the staff past and present for also keeping the community alive.  And also the community members who never gave up, thank you.
Finally, Thank You Demios.  You were an amazing player in the filesharing world.  May the Demonoid ethos continue on in the hearts of all those who were able to experience the unique community Demios created all those years ago.

RIP Demios

So terribly sad to hear this news. Thank you, phaze1G, for sharing it with us. I have been a grateful member since ~2007. I posted to Demonoid and TPB. For better or worse, now there's only TPB for me. Thanks to all the kind and generous contributors who made Demonoid my favorite. You were my first. Thank you, Deimos, for creating the space for such a wonderful community.

Thanks for caring and sharing.
Cheers and tears, FerraBit

R.I.P.  Deimos & Demonoid.   Peace to your Family.

Your fight will never die.   I've only had the short privilege of membership.

Any incarnation henceforth will be either a sham or and Ode pale in comparison.

Thank You for your efforts.

Tragic news.  I joined Demonoid back in the early-mid 2000s (I think 2007? but I can't even remember anymore) and uploaded my first torrent here.  Was spoiled by the level of categorization available for torrents (not just "Music" but "Music > Folk", for instance; not just "Books" but "Books > Children's"), and the wonderful people, so friendly and willing to help.  Nothing out there is the same.  Demonoid was a one-stop shop for everything - your files and your socialization.  Deimos's work will be sorely missed.  My condolences to the family.

Oh, Phaze,

I'm incredibly sorry for your loss (our loss). No way in a million years did I ever think something like this would happen to him. Despite absolute no communication, I still never thought of that possibility. I share the same feelings as everyone else, I'm extremely saddened. Deimos sounded like a wonderful person, and someone I would have loved to get to know as you did.

You've mentioned that someone logged in to his laptop shortly after the accident. I almost got the impression that it was stolen, and or the crash was possibly not an accident. Am I assuming this correctly?

I certainly understand you not wanting to have to do anything that remotely resembles Demonoid or Deimos. Too many bad memories. However, I do remember your kindness, and I think you're pretty awesome too! I do hope you'd keep communicating with us through Discord. I know at some point, you probably not going to continue the responsibility of fora. But I also hope this doesn't stop you from using torrents or being involved in the torrent community. I'm pretty sure Deimos would not want that. Please don't be a stranger, you were just as much a part of our lives as Deimos was.

I never talked to Deimos or any other staff that I recall. I'm sorry for that, I wish I'd known you all a little. Demonoid was a great place, a great service, a kind of home for me too. Deimos, be at peace, and thank you for what you created. Demonoid staff, thank you for all you've done. Another great chapter in file-sharing, concluding ... it's resting heavy on my heart.
